  • GO hike Switzerland's premier long-distance hiking tour with views of some of the most famous mountains in Switzerland, such as the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau
  • GO stay mostly in charming mountain inns, serving scrumptious Swiss cuisine
  • GO hike with the option to supplement elevation gain using lifts and trains, including an optional side trip to the Jungfraujoch, also known as the Top of Europe (not included)

The Bernese Oberland Traverse is the classic Swiss experience, with countless lakes and snow-capped mountain peaks. This route has endless, beautiful, awe-inspiring mountain scenery, a long history of mountain and adventure travel and many famous towns, including the traditional mountain town of Grindelwald, the traditional upper-class mountain holiday town of Wengen, Lauterbrunnen with its impressive waterfalls and Mürren, the town built at the top to a cliff. There are attractions such as the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria), which was famed through its appearance in the James Bond film Her Majesty's Secret Service and the Jungfraubhan, the train that passes through the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe at 3454 m above sea level.

On the Bernese Oberland traverse, you visit the popular towns of Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren. You walk in a landscape that has inspired poets and artists for centuries. The route passes directly under the famous North Face of the Eiger. On this hike, you also visit some less-known parts of the Bernese Oberland that are more remote and quieter but just as beautiful.

Compared to many other tours in the Alps, a benefit to the Bernese Oberland Travers is the option to adjust the length of your days on much of the tour with public transport. The Swiss are famous for their excellent public transport system, and much of the Bernese Oberland is made accessible with buses, trains, cog trains, chair lifts, gondolas and cable cars. This allows you to make parts of the hike as easy or difficult as you desire or to spend more time in one location to see one of the attractions or while you find it the most beautiful place to relax in the mountains. Another highlight is the Swiss culture. The people in the Bernese Oberland have been taking care of the guests who visit the area for many generations, and they offer excellent service, even at the most basic of accommodations. If you are looking for a higher level of comfort, this is also readily available on most nights, with many accommodations offering private rooms.

The final thing that makes this and any hike an extraordinary experience is the food. The Swiss offer a great tradition of exquisite food. On the Bernese Oberland Traverse, you do not need to hike far to find a guest house, hut, hotel or restaurant that serves excellent food. Swiss wines are not widely known, but there are many excellent varieties, which also is true of Swiss beer. Many of the guest houses and huts along the route also serve homemade lemonade and iced tea, an excellent choice for a thirsty hiker.

While the Bernese Oberland Experience is loaded with natural beauty, the first part of the tour is also loaded with tourists. Adventurers who look forward to solitude on the trail, should consider our Tour du Mont Blanc Alternative.
