AV1-8 Alta Via 1 Fast 8-day Itinerary
Highlights
- GO hike hut to hut across the Italian Dolomites, which are cherished for their unique beauty and war history
- GO back in time and immerse yourself in World War I history
- GO take alternate routings to enjoy comfortable trails that avoid exposure that is typical on trails throughout the Dolomites and the Alps
The Alta Via 1 trek is Italy's highlight long-distance hiking trail and leads awe-struck hikers through the Dolomites from north to south. This route is famous, and for very good reason. Along the way are a multitude of comfortable mountain huts. What makes this tour truly stand out is the World War I history, as it passes by former battlefields, fortification remnants, and other clues that this serene environment was not always so peaceful. We recommend doing some reading on World War I history in the Dolomites before the tour, to make it that much more interesting.

Although accommodations on the Alta Via 1 are filling up fast, we are still able to find solutions to make itineraries work. We require a flexible date range of at least 2 weeks. The first and last sections of the trail have the most restricted availability, and they require the use of 1 or 2 off-trail accommodations and one or two longer days of hiking. The off-trail accommodations are easily reachable by bus during the main season (max. 20 minutes).
Private rooms are extremely limited and customers who book the Classic Package should expect some dormitories to be substituted for private rooms. Invoices will be adjusted down accordingly.
You can book the tour online by following the green button, “GO Book the Tour.”
Because availability for this tour is currently very limited, we recommend considering some of our other hut-to-hut hiking itineraries that have more availability:
HHT12 Best of the Dolomites Trek - best if you want a more comfortable alternative to the Alta Via 1
HHT10 Bernese Oberland Traverse - best if private rooms are important to you and/or you want a comfortable alternative to the Tour du Mont Blanc
HHT13 Hut to Hut in Switzerland – best if you want an authentic and comfortable experience, along with delicious local food, such as Appenzeller cheese
HHT2 Culinary Delight Hut Hiking Tour – best if you like food as much as you like hiking
HHT3 Tour des Combins – best if you are experienced and fit, as well as want a challenging and authentic tour with more of a backcountry feel
HHT5 Tour of the Vanoise – best if you want incredible views with as little daily elevation gain and loss as is possible in the Alps (this is the best option if you have bad knees)
HHT6 Hut to Hut Light in the Austrian Alps – best if you want shorter days and want something easy to access from the nearest airport
