Dolomites Self-Guided Tours: Hut-to-Hut Hiking, Via Ferrata & Cycling

Dolomites Landscape

The Dolomites are widely considered one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, known for dramatic limestone peaks, rugged terrain, and an extensive network of alpine trails. These landscapes make the region one of the top destinations for hut-to-hut hiking (rifugio-to-rifugio trekking), attracting travelers from around the world who return again and again. A well-developed mountain hut system offering traditional Italian cuisine and comfortable overnight stays adds to the unique experience of trekking in the Dolomites.

At Alpenventures UNGUIDED, we offer a range of self-guided Dolomites tours, each designed to provide a different way to experience the region. The classic route is the Alta Via 1, while our Best of the Dolomites Trek offers an alternative that many of our travelers prefer for its variety and pacing. For more experienced hikers, we offer multiple Alta Via 2 itineraries, as well as via ferrata hut-to-hut tours that access more technical terrain. In addition, our Munich to Venice Bike Tour passes directly through the Dolomites, offering a different perspective on the region.

The terrain in the Dolomites is rugged and often underestimated. Each year, we see travelers arrive unprepared for the physical demands of alpine hiking in this environment. We strongly recommend reviewing our blog post, Trekking in the Dolomites - Let's get real, to better understand trail conditions, difficulty levels, and whether this type of trip is the right fit for your experience and expectations.

The Brenta Dolomites Via Ferratas: The Bocchette Traverse is one of the most iconic self-guided via ferrata hut-to-hut adventures in the Alps. This Brenta Dolomites self-guided tour links a network of historic via ferratas, including the famous Via delle Bocchette, through the remote and incredibly rugged Brenta Group of the Dolomites. While the via ferratas themselves are not highly technical on this route, the extreme alpine terrain and glacier crossings (no rope required) make this tour a true gem for experienced alpinists

The Italian Dolomites’ most famous long-distance trek leads awe-struck hikers from north to south, offering the classic Dolomites experience. The route alternates between mountain meadows and rugged alpine terrain, revealing unforgettable views at every turn. Along this trail, many hikers fall in love with the Dolomites. The Alta Via 1 remains remote, bypassing villages and overnighting in traditional mountain huts known as rifugios. We offer multiple itineraries for various fitness levels, as well as shorter snippets of the trail for those looking for a smaller sample of hut-to-hut hiking in the Dolomites

The Alta Via 2 Hiker’s Route leads hikers through remote and wild corners of the Italian Dolomites. This route, despite its challenging terrain, is cherished by locals and foreigners alike and offers an intense immersion into classic Dolomites terrain. Our twist on the classic Alta Via 2 itinerary avoids some of the most technical terrain of the standard Alta Via 2 route, making it accessible, although still challenging, for experienced and sure-footed hikers who are free from vertigo and who do not have a fear of heights

Castles, mountains, food, culture, and history—this Munich to Venice bike tour spans three countries and offers the experience of a lifetime. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Bavarian Alps, Austria’s spectacular Tyrolean mountains, and the city of Innsbruck, nestled deep in the Inn Valley. From there, the journey continues across the Italian Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and into wine country and rural farmland before reaching Venice. We recommend allowing time to explore Munich and Venice before and after your tour. The route is well signed, with most of the journey following dedicated bike paths and small rural roads
