The Bernese Oberland Traverse is the
classic Swiss experience, with countless lakes and snow-capped mountain peaks.
This route has endless, beautiful, awe-inspiring mountain scenery, as well as a
long history of mountain and adventure travel. Along the way, there are many
famous towns, including the traditional mountain town of Grindelwald, the
traditional upper-class mountain holiday town of Wengen, Lauterbrunnen with its
impressive waterfalls and Mürren, the town built at the top of a cliff. You can
opt to hike along the base of the iconic Eiger North Face. There are
attractions such as the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria), which was famed through its
appearance in the James Bond film Her Majesty's Secret Service as well as the
Jungfraubahn, the train that passes through the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch (Top
of Europe). Compared to many other tours in the Alps, a
benefit to the Bernese Oberland Travers is the option to adjust the length of
your days on much of the tour with public transport. The Swiss are famous for
their excellent public transport system, and much of the Bernese Oberland is
made accessible with buses, trains, cog trains, chair lifts, gondolas and cable
cars. This allows you to make parts of the hike as easy or difficult as you
desire, or to spend more time in one location to see one of the attractions.
This also allows non-hiking travel partners to meet you at each accommodation
along the way, or can be a great option for hikers who aren't 100% certain of
their physical ability to do the hike. Another highlight of this route is the
Swiss culture. The people in the Bernese Oberland have been taking care of the
guests who visit the area for many generations, and they offer excellent
service, even at the most basic of accommodations. If you are looking for a
higher level of comfort, this is also readily available on most nights, with
many accommodations offering private rooms. The final thing that makes this and any
hike an extraordinary experience is the food. The Swiss offer a great tradition
of exquisite food. On the Bernese Oberland Traverse, you do not need to hike
far to find a guest house, hut, hotel or restaurant that serves excellent food.
Swiss wines are not widely known, but there are many excellent varieties, which
is also true of Swiss beer. Many of the guest houses and huts along the route
also serve homemade lemonade and iced tea, an excellent choice for a thirsty
hiker.
