Alta Via 8 Dolomites Western Traverse: Rosengarten AV8-4C
The
Rosengarten section of the Alta Via 8 traverses through one of the most rugged
and dramatic landscapes in the Dolomites. This portion of the route is defined
by steeper terrain, narrower trails, and a stronger sense of immersion in the
raw geology of the mountains. The
journey begins innocently with a winding ascent through spruce and larch
forest, passing small waterfalls and quiet resting spots along the trail,
before reaching alpine terrain at the foot of the Schlern massif. Over
the following days, hikers traverse a network of well-established mountain
trails that wind through scree slopes, high passes, and enclosed valleys framed
by dramatic rock walls. The terrain is consistently engaging, with frequent
elevation changes and sections that require careful footing, but it remains
non-technical throughout. This is a landscape that feels more remote and
elemental, where the scale of the surroundings becomes a defining part of the
experience. Hiking
through the Rosengarten is challenging and is not for everyone. Hikers taking
on this section should have a reasonable tolerance for heights and experience
in alpine terrain. While there are some unavoidable challenges, such as a short
exposed section secured with cables (no special equipment required) and a steep
scree descent, hikers will have a choice of two routes when exiting the group.
The first option follows a more direct and adventurous line on a reinforced
trail over a high pass, with steeper ascents and a greater sense of exposure.
Alternatively, a longer but more gradual route contours around the massif on
easier trails. This
itinerary ends at Passo Costalunga, where there is an easy bus connection to
Bozen-Bolzano.
