The Via Claudia Augusta is the oldest and most established bike route that crosses the Alps, making it an ideal tour for beginners or anyone who wants to take advantage of the excellent bicycle touring infrastructure along the way. We don’t cover the entire route, which stretches from Augsburg to Venice, but instead focus on the highlight section across the Alps, connecting onto it from two must-see nearby locations: the Bavarian mountain town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (home to the highest point in Germany) and Torbole at the tip of Italy’s idyllic Lake Garda.

The route is clearly signed out and stays almost entirely away from vehicle traffic, with some small exceptions in the heart of small villages or short stretches of bicycle lane on a road, allowing cyclists to enjoy every kilometer to the fullest. Even the two high passes—Fernpass and Reschenpass —can be skipped thanks to bike-friendly shuttles dedicated to Via Claudia Augusta riders. What this means is that it is possible to cross the Alps by bicycle without actually cycling up a pass.  As you follow the route, first through Germany and then Austria and finally Italy, you will stay each night in hand-picked hotels and have access to culinary specialties from the multiple regions you pass through.

What makes this tour truly unique is the combination of its rich history and its varied natural landscapes. The Via Claudia Augusta dates back to Roman times, when it served as a major trading route, and many historical waypoints-such as ancient road segments, milestones, and former settlements are still visible today. Equally striking is the scenery you move through: gentle Bavarian hills, magnificent mountain landscapes, and beautiful valleys that gradually open into Mediterranean wine and orchard lands. Together, these cultural and natural elements create a route with a remarkable balance of historical sites, lively and welcoming towns, regional culture and cuisine, and diverse natural beauty.

For an even smoother experience, you can rent a bike or e-bike through us, or add our Airport-to-Airport package. And for those who prefer to travel light, we offer nightly luggage transfers. As with every tour, we support you with a navigation app and a guidebook, so you always know what’s next and can enjoy the ride with confidence.
