Characterized by alpine lakes, expansive meadows and big mountain views, this self-guided hut-to-hut hike in Switzerland starts in Appenzell and follows a circular route across the Alpstein range between Zurich and the Rhine River Valley. In this traditionally Swiss region, hikers enjoy local specialities like world-class cheese and exceptional mountain-aged whiskey, with the option to follow our dedicated Swiss Whiskey Trek. A major highlight is the cliffside Aescher Hut, often called Switzerland’s most famous hut; visiting in the quieter morning and evening hours after day visitors have left feels truly magical.
Throughout the tour, you stay in cosy mountain huts run by warm local hosts. Facilities are comfortable, many huts offer private rooms, and most have full restaurants serving à la carte dinners. As with our other Switzerland self-guided trips, Alpenventures UNGUIDED arranges hut reservations and key logistics and supports you with a detailed eGuidebook and offline navigation app, so you can hike independently with extra peace of mind.
Our two LIGHT itineraries for this trek avoid challenging terrain and have a longer season than most hut-to-hut hikes in the Alps, from the beginning of June until the middle of October.
The other itineraries are designed for experienced and fit hikers. These itineraries travel through alpine terrain with some exposure, and some sections that provide steel cables to hold onto for additional confidence (no specialized equipment required). The most exposed section can be bypassed by gondola, but the gondola is under construction in 2026 and will have frequent closures

Calling all trail foodies—this is Swiss cuisine with a view. 🥔🧀🍫
On our Hut to Hut Switzerland Tour, Olga discovered that every stop is a feast. Think golden Rösti (crispy potato perfection), creamy local cheeses, and silky Swiss chocolate that tastes even better after a day on the trail.
Breakfasts? Always fresh and local—warm bread and rolls, butter straight from nearby farms, muesli, rich milk, mountain cheeses, and cold cuts. Every hut served high-quality, organic meals that made refueling pure joy.
And the drinks? 🍻 Each mountain hut offered its own locally brewed beers, every one with a unique flavor and hiking-themed label. Olga even sampled flights at a village brewery, sipping from tiny glasses as pretty as the alpine views.
This is hut-to-hut hiking at its tastiest—where every meal feels like part of the adventure.

"This was our first time in Switzerland and we are so glad that we booked this trip! It was so unique and amazing, and exceeded our expectations despite the heavy rain on several of our days. All of the Berggasthauses were so special and unique in their character, it`s hard to pick a favorite. Highlights for us included: the best Rösti ever at Mesmer, the very warm hospitality/conversation that accompanied the three course dinner at Tierwis that we enjoyed with the host and her friends, the 360 views at Saxer Lücke, the cheese and yogurt provided by the dairy farm at Meglisalp, and seeing an Alpine Ibex.
I have wanted to do a hut-to-hut in Switzerland for quite some time but was overwhelmed by the planning logistics and language barrier, and couldn`t figure out how to get started. I`m so glad I found Alpenventures and would recommend them to anybody who is looking for an unguided experience with all of the planning taken care of."

This summer, I scouted a new trek with some of my nearest and dearest friends to an incredible region of Switzerland. This region is tucked between Zurich and the Rhine River Valley, which marks the borders of Austria and Liechtenstein. I am happy to say that we discovered an absolute gem of a trek, and I can`t wait to share it with the Alpenventures community! Here are just some of the things that I loved about it:
1️⃣ I`m still dreaming of the views and the peaceful sunrises I enjoyed every day.
2️⃣ This region is authentically Swiss. We continuously met friendly locals on the trail, and noticed an absence of the masses of tourists we often encounter in Switzerland.
3️⃣ There is a high concentration of huts in this area, which means we can offer multiple itineraries (easy and difficult), and there are quite a few huts that have private rooms.
4️⃣ This tour includes an overnight at one of the most famous huts in all of Switzerland. Sleeping at this hut, and enjoying the quiet and peace in the late evening and early morning, is extra magical.
4️⃣ Each hut sells their own unique whiskey, and one of our hiking itineraries will be specifically for whiskey lovers.
5️⃣ My mouth still waters when I think of the scrumptious regional cheese.
6️⃣ Several of the huts are located at gondola stations, making it feasible for us to offer a luggage-transfer friendly itinerary...a rare luxury in the Alps.
